Thermometer Check-up: Prepping for Your Big Cook

With Thanksgiving almost upon us, it’s time to get ready for the biggest cook of the year. You’ve collected your recipes and learned how to cook a turkey properly, but have you checked your thermometer?
We stand by our products and want to make sure you’re having a good experience with them. ThermoWorks professional-grade thermometers are top of the line when it comes to accuracy and build quality, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have problems. Did someone stick the tip of a Thermapen® ONE probe in a flame? Or maybe drop a ThermoPop® 2 in a sink of soapy water and not tell you? Has your Pro-Series cable been kinked in the drawer, or does your unit just have a dead battery? Check now before your turkey is in the oven!
Pre-Thanksgiving Thermometer Checklist:
- Check thermometer batteries
- Check probes for functionality and accuracy
- Check firmware, where applicable
Check the batteries
Though the batteries in our thermometers last a long time, they don’t last forever. Be sure your Thermapen ONE is ready to go, and do the same for your ChefAlarm and any timers you’ll use. Replace batteries as needed. Get the cradle charged up for your RFX™ MEAT and make sure your Signals is fully charged (or that you know where the plug and adapter are).
Check probe accuracy
As we alluded to above, probes aren’t indestructible. If someone else used your probe and didn’t care for it properly, it might be throwing bad readings. Test your probes and your thermometer with a properly made ice bath.

Fill a cup all the way with ice, then add cold water to fill in the gaps. Stir your thermometer in the water for a few seconds and see what it reads. Thermapen ONE should read 32.0±0.5°F (0.0±0.3°C), ThermoPops and all leave-in thermometers that use Pro-Series probes should all read 32±1.8°F(0±1°C).
If you find you’re in need of a new probe, we have dozens of Pro-Series styles to choose from, as well as those with a Type-K fitting.
Check your firmware
If you have a Wi-Fi-enabled thermometer like Signals or RFX, turn it on and set it up in advance at least once to make sure your firmware is up to date, especially if you haven’t used it in a while. Correct firmware will help your cook go better, and having it loaded up beforehand will make your cook day that much less stressful.
Repair if needed
If your thermometer fails the test, or if its body is actually broken, call or email our our Tech Support department. We do in-house repairs on thermometers that take, on average, 3-4 business days after arrival. It’s like getting a new thermometer, without having to get a new thermometer!
Ready, set, cook!
So grab those thermometers, get a cup of ice, swap out some batteries, and get ready for the holiday season with your ThermoWorks thermometers. Share the joy of great food with those you love with our quality tools this season. Happy cooking!
